African Leaders Must Shift From Speeches To Action – P.L.O Lumumba
Lawyer and former Director of the Kenya Anti-Corruption Commission, Prof. Patrick Loch Otieno Lumumba, has called on African leaders to move beyond ceremonial speeches and focus on tangible action if the continent is to realise its potential.
Speaking at the 2026 African Prosperity Dialogues on the theme “Empowering SMEs, Women and Youth in Africa’s Single Market: Innovate, Collaborate, Trade”, Lumumba criticised a culture where politicians read prepared statements and “walk away”, leaving commitments unfulfilled.
According to him, Africans have tolerated this behaviour for too long, often prioritising politeness over accountability.

Lumumba stressed that unless African leaders shift from rhetoric to implementation, the vision of a prosperous, integrated continent will remain out of reach.
“Until the day our politicians change their modus operandi, this continent will not realise. They must be called out. We have been too nice to politicians for too long. The time is now to tell them the truth in its unadulterated form,” he said.
