Africa Must Reduce Reliance On Foreign Aid – Odododiodioo MP

Member of Parliament for Odododiodioo, Alfred Nii Kotey Ashie, has called on African leaders to reduce dependence on foreign aid and prioritise building their economies from within.

Speaking on Breakfast Daily on Channel One TV on Thursday, March 26, Mr Kotey Ashie argued that Africa’s reliance on aid from European countries weakens its ability to firmly challenge past injustices.

According to him, the continent’s dependence on external support limits its voice on critical issues, including calls for reparative justice.

Mr Kotey Ashie stressed that Africa has the human and natural resources needed to become self-sufficient if leaders commit to developing the continent from within.

“We should look away with all this aid; we should stop being lazy and build what we have. We have the men, we have the resources; all we need is the will,” he said.

His comments come on the back of renewed global conversations on historical injustices, following the passage of a slavery reparations motion tabled by President John Dramani Mahama at the United Nations General Assembly.

The resolution urged the UN to recognise the transatlantic slave trade as one of the gravest crimes ever committed against humanity.

Following debates and deliberations, 123 nations voted in favour of the motion, signalling broad international backing for the initiative.

However, three countries the United States, Argentina, and Israel voted against it, while 52 nations abstained.
