Adenta Kumi Charged with Publication of False News

Alfred Ababio Kumi, popularly known as Adenta Kumi, has been charged with publication of false news by the National Investigations Bureau (NIB) following his arrest on Friday, May 23, 2025.

His legal representative, Clement Opoku Gyamfi, confirmed the charge during an interview on Asempa FM’s Eko Sii Sen programme.

According to Gyamfi, the charge stems from statements Kumi allegedly made during media appearances, social media posts, and in a petition to President John Mahama concerning the committee probing the potential removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo.

In his petition, Kumi accused three members of the judicial committee — Justices Pwamang, Adibu-Asiedu, and Yonni Kulendi — of engaging in an inappropriate meeting with Thaddeus Sory, counsel for the petitioner Daniel Ofori, at Santoku Restaurant in Accra’s Airport Residential Area after the first hearing on May 15, 2025.

He alleged that the judges were overheard discussing matters relating to the case — a claim that gained traction after a video of the supposed meeting surfaced online. The authenticity and context of the video, however, remain the subject of public scrutiny.

Kumi’s arrest has drawn sharp criticism from his party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), which has described the action as an attempt by the NDC-led government to intimidate political opponents. The General Secretary of the NPP, Justin Frimpong Kodua, further alleged that Kumi’s wife suffered a miscarriage due to the trauma of the dawn raid during which her husband was arrested.

Lawyer Clement Gyamfi disclosed that Kumi’s caution statement has been taken and a formal bail application has been submitted. He expressed optimism that bail would be granted, describing the case as a misdemeanor.

“This is not a felony. It’s a bailable offence, and we expect the NIB to do the right thing,” Gyamfi stated.

The arrest has intensified debates over freedom of expression, judicial integrity, and political persecution, with several civil society groups calling for transparency in handling the matter.
