Ablekuma North Rerun: Police Officer Assaults GHOne TV Journalist

A police officer stationed at the Church of Pentecost, North Odorkor Polling 2 Station, reportedly assaulted a GHOne TV journalist during the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun on Friday.

According to a report by Puretvonline, the incident occurred when the journalist, identified as Agyekum Banahene, attempted to access the inner perimeter of the polling centre to cover the election proceedings.

Narrating the ordeal, Banahene said the officer singled him out despite the presence of several other media personnel at the scene.

“He just came to me and asked me to leave the premises. Meanwhile, there were other media guys around; he didn’t ask anyone else to leave — only me,” Banahene recounted.

When he refused to comply, asserting his right as a journalist to monitor and report from the location, the situation escalated.

“I said no, I can’t go — what if something happens and I’m not here to report? He started pushing me and then slapped me across the face for no reason. I haven’t wronged anyone,” he added.

The journalist described the officer’s actions as not only unprovoked and unprofessional but also a clear violation of press freedom — a constitutional right guaranteed under Ghana’s democratic framework.

“We talk about press freedom — but where is it when a uniformed officer, who knows the law, decides to assault a journalist on duty?” Banahene questioned.

He disclosed that he plans to lodge a formal complaint with the Accra Regional Police Command on Monday. According to him, the mayor of Accra has already reached out and advised him to pursue the matter officially.

As of the time of filing this report, the Ghana Police Service has not issued any public statement regarding the alleged assault.
