Former Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Mavis Hawa Koomson, has accused the husband of her successor, Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor, of being among a group of individuals who physically assaulted her during the chaotic Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun held on Friday, July 11, 2025.
Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen program, the former Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture alleged that two or three of the attackers were familiar to her, including a man she identified as the spouse of a sitting MP. Although she did not confirm his name, she insisted that she recognised him from previous encounters.
“All I saw was that they were advancing towards me. Someone was holding a cutlass, declaring that they would finish me today,” Koomson recounted. “There was this other short guy in an orange-sleeved jacket and camouflage shorts—he usually moves with the MP’s husband,” she added.

According to her, some of the assailants came from Kasoa and deliberately targeted her in what she described as a premeditated attempt on her life.
The incident unfolded at the St. Peter’s Methodist Church polling station in Odorkor, a known hotspot in Accra, where the rerun had drawn heightened political tension. Voting was temporarily suspended following the outbreak of violence, prompting an immediate response from security agencies.
Koomson, who was accompanied by former Okaikoi South MP Darkoa Newman, said the situation became so dire that Newman screamed for her to flee. However, with no safe exit, she was forced to defend herself.
“There were more than 30 guys coming towards me, and I couldn’t have faced them as a woman,” Koomson said.
Eyewitnesses and viral video footage from the scene showed Koomson deploying pepper spray as her attackers closed in. In one harrowing clip, she is seen falling to the ground and being stepped on in the groin before being rescued by police.
Justifying her use of the pepper spray, she stated, “I couldn’t have just stood there and let them kill me. One of them had a gun, and I’m grateful to God it wasn’t fired. I could have died.”
The former MP further referenced a disturbing history of political violence against her family, revealing that her son had been stabbed at a registration centre exactly a year and a month ago.
In light of the attack, Hawa Koomson has called on the Ghana Police Service and relevant authorities to conduct a full-scale investigation into the incident. She insisted that justice must be served, regardless of who is involved or their political affiliations.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has confirmed that investigations are ongoing but has yet to announce any arrests in connection with the assault.
