8.8 million Nigerians projected to own CCTV cameras, security tech in their homes by 2029

Before Mike (not his real name) hired domestic staff in his home, he believed CCTV cameras were for banks, offices, or sprawling estates.

But today, his residence in Ogun State is rigged with smart cameras synced directly to his smartphone. “It’s given me less anxiety, especially when artisans are around,” he says.

In a country where insecurity is rampant, home surveillance systems are no longer considered a luxury—they’re a necessity.

According to the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics, over 600,000 deaths were recorded in the country between May 2023 and April 2024 due to insecurity.

Nigeria ranked 7th globally in terrorism-related fatalities in 2024, based on the Global Terrorism Index. Yet, the institutions tasked with curbing the crisis have struggled: in 2023, Nigeria’s police force was ranked the 4th worst in the world.

Faced with unreliable security infrastructure, many Nigerians are turning to technology to safeguard their homes.

Statista projects that by 2029, about 8.8 million Nigerian households will adopt smart home security systems, up from 15.5% market penetration in 2025 to 17.5%. These setups typically include surveillance cameras, motion sensors, and remote-controlled door locks—often powered by solar energy due to frequent power outages.

For many, it’s not just about stopping crime—it’s about staying informed.

Iyanu Adewole, who lives in a duplex in Kwara State, calls her CCTV system a “third eye.”

Installed in 2019 after a burglary, her solar-powered setup helped solve a theft in her home. “Someone stole money from my dad’s bag in the living room, so we reviewed the footage and discovered who it was,” she recalls. Though she admits the system doesn’t make her feel safer, it gives her a sense of oversight.

Security in Kwara State remains precarious, threatened by terror groups, banditry, farmer-herder clashes, and cult violence—despite government interventions.

Esther Salami in Ogun State received her CCTV camera as a gift. Though she concedes it hasn’t improved her sense of security, she considers it indispensable. “It would always be useful in case you need to double-check something,” she says.
