68% Of Ghanaians Approve Of Mahama’s Performance — IEA Survey

Public confidence in President John Dramani Mahama remains strong despite ongoing socioeconomic challenges, according to a new survey by the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA).

The findings, contained in a press release dated February 11, 2026, show that 68 per cent of respondents approve of the way President Mahama is handling his job, while 22 per cent disapprove and 10 per cent have no opinion. The poll was conducted in December 2025 and sampled over 1,000 people across all regions of Ghana.

The IEA said the survey was carried out to assess public opinion on the President’s job performance one year after the 2024 general election, as well as to gauge views on prevailing socioeconomic pressures, including the cost of food, consumer goods, and unemployment.

According to the report, President Mahama assumed office on January 7, 2025, amid high public expectations and significant economic and governance challenges, such as high debt levels, a rapidly depreciating currency, inflation, unemployment, and concerns about government size.

One year on, the IEA noted that while many key economic indicators appear to be moving in the right direction, substantial socioeconomic difficulties remain.

Despite the relatively high approval rating, the survey revealed deep public concern about the rising cost of living. Seven out of ten Ghanaians (71 per cent) said they are very concerned about the price of food and other consumer items.

Unemployment and illegal mining also emerged as major national concerns. The poll found that 46 per cent of respondents identified unemployment as one of the most important issues facing the country, while 30 per cent cited illegal mining.

The IEA indicated that although the President enjoys a solid base of support, the presence of a notable minority who disapprove or remain undecided suggests that continued efforts will be needed to address citizens’ concerns and broaden public confidence.

The survey underscores a mixed public mood: strong approval for the President’s performance alongside persistent anxiety over economic pressures affecting households across the country.
