50 Suspects Arrested in Nkwanta Conflict

Fifty individuals believed to be involved in the recent conflict in Nkwanta have been arrested during an operation in Shiare in the Oti Region.

The arrests, conducted early Tuesday, January 21, 2025, come as part of efforts to restore calm to the conflict-stricken area.

The suspects are currently undergoing screening and will face legal proceedings upon completion of the process.

Updating the public, Oti Regional Police Commander, DCOP Alex Acquah, revealed the devastating toll of the renewed clashes:

  • Lives Lost: Six people have died.
  • Injuries: Ten individuals have been injured.
  • Property Damage: Twelve homes and a shop have been destroyed.

National Security Coordinator, DCOP Osman Abdul Razak, visited the area to assess the damage and engage with traditional leaders from both sides of the conflict. His visit aimed to facilitate dialogue and foster peace.

DCOP Razak also raised concerns about the growing trend of chieftaincy and land disputes in the country.

He stressed the need for greater collaboration among security agencies to manage such conflicts effectively.

The Chief of Army Staff, Maj Gen Bismarck Kwasi Onwona, commended the security agencies for their swift and coordinated response, emphasising the importance of their united efforts in maintaining peace and stability in the region.

Authorities continue to urge all parties to exercise restraint and work towards a peaceful resolution.
