2026 Broadcasters Convention: Kufuor Urges African Media to Help Citizens Know Africa
Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has challenged the African media to play a stronger role in helping citizens understand developments across the continent.
According to him, many Africans remain unfamiliar with what is happening in other parts of Africa despite continued discussions about Pan-Africanism and African integration.
Speaking at the 2026 Broadcasters Convention, Mr Kufuor said the media had a responsibility to help Africans understand one another and develop a shared awareness of the continent.
“Africans must know Africa. We do not know ourselves; we must admit,” he said.
He observed that an average person in Accra might have limited knowledge of developments in East, Southern or Northern Africa, while people in other regions could similarly lack knowledge about West Africa.
Mr Kufuor said this gap undermined efforts towards deeper African integration.
He noted that conversations about Pan-Africanism and integration had largely remained among presidents, governments, academics and institutions, with insufficient involvement of citizens at the grassroots.
“How do we bring Africa to the Africans?” he asked.
Mr Kufuor said the Africa Public Interest Media Initiative (APIMI) had been conceived partly to address this challenge by using the media to connect Africans, share knowledge and opportunities, and strengthen the voice of the African citizen.
He said the initiative should help Africans communicate with one another, understand the continent and build the capacity to speak for themselves to the wider world.
