16 Youth Church Members Laid to Rest After Highway Tragedy

The town of Obogu in the Asante-Akim South Municipality was plunged into mourning over the weekend as a mass burial ceremony was held for 16 members of the Saviour Church Youth Ministry, who perished in a horrific road accident along the Juaso-Nkawkaw stretch of the Accra-Kumasi highway.

The victims, all young members of the vibrant church group, were returning from a church congress in Koforidua when their journey was cut short in the most tragic fashion.

According to eyewitness reports, a fuel tanker travelling towards Accra burst a tire while overtaking another vehicle. The driver lost control, and the tanker swerved into the opposite lane, colliding head-on with a Ford Transit bus that was transporting the church youth back home.

The impact was devastating. Fifteen passengers died instantly, with four others suffering critical injuries. Emergency services rushed the survivors to nearby health facilities, where they continue to fight for their lives.

On the day of the burial, a heavy pall of grief hung over Obogu. Mourners, dressed in black and red, gathered at the community park for a sorrowful farewell to the lives lost too soon. Wailing, prayers, and hymns echoed across the town as families, friends, church leaders, and traditional authorities paid their final respects.

Leaders of the Saviour Church International were visibly shaken. In a solemn address, one senior cleric described the tragedy as “one of the darkest moments in the church’s history.” He called on members to unite in faith and draw strength from their shared sorrow.

“These young souls were dedicated to God’s work. They were the future of our ministry. Now they are gone in the blink of an eye. We must hold each other close and pray for comfort and healing,” the church leader said.

The tragic incident has reignited calls for urgent road safety reforms, particularly on high-risk stretches of the Accra-Kumasi highway. Local authorities, while expressing condolences, have pledged to collaborate with national agencies to investigate the cause of the accident and implement stricter safety measures.

As the coffins were lowered one after the other into the ground, Obogu wept as one. The scars of this tragedy will linger, not only in the church but in every home touched by the young lives lost in service, faith, and fellowship.

The four injured survivors remain in critical condition, and the community continues to hold nightly vigils in hope and prayer.
