Jonathan “Worldwide” Tetteh announced himself on the continental stage in emphatic fashion on Saturday night, pulling off a stunning upset to defeat Seth Gyimah, popularly known as Freezy Macbones, and capture the WBA Africa Light Heavyweight title in a bout that blended high-level boxing with one of the most bizarre moments seen in recent Ghanaian boxing history.
The University of Ghana Stadium, packed with an estimated 10,000 fans, crackled with anticipation as the headline contest of the Legacy Rise fight night unfolded. The atmosphere was elevated further by the presence of President John Dramani Mahama, who served as Special Guest of Honour, lending national significance to an event already brimming with expectation.
Organised by Sharaf Mahama, CEO of Legacy Rise, the bill had promised fireworks, but few predicted the dramatic turn the main event would take.

Entering the ring, UK-based Freezy Macbones carried the weight of expectation.
The 36-year-old was widely regarded as the more experienced fighter and the clear favourite, having built a reputation for toughness and ring IQ. However, the months of verbal sparring and psychological warfare leading into the bout appeared to have taken a toll.
From the opening bell, 25-year-old Jonathan Tetteh showed no respect for reputation or pedigree. Fast, sharp and aggressive, the unbeaten Ghanaian immediately set the tempo.
Rounds 1–2:
Tetteh burst out of the blocks, using superior hand speed and sharp combinations to disrupt Macbones’ rhythm. His confidence was evident as he repeatedly beat the favourite to the punch, drawing loud approval from the home crowd.
Rounds 3–6:
Macbones gradually asserted his experience. He began to find his range with stiff jabs and effective body work, slowing Tetteh and suggesting a possible late-round takeover. The contest appeared to be swinging back in the veteran’s favour as the rounds wore on.
Round 7:
Fatigue became visible in Tetteh’s movement. Under sustained pressure, he resorted to clinching to survive exchanges, raising questions about whether his early intensity had cost him too much energy.
The fight’s decisive moment came in the eighth and final round, and few inside the stadium could believe what they witnessed.
During a heated exchange at close quarters, Tetteh suddenly recoiled, staggered back, and collapsed to the canvas, accusing Macbones of biting his shoulder in frustration. The claim sent shockwaves through the arena.
After consulting briefly and observing the situation, the referee ruled the action unsportsmanlike and deducted points from Macbones. The decision drew mixed reactions – some were stunned, others incensed – but it would ultimately prove pivotal.
As the final bell sounded, tension gripped the stadium. With President Mahama watching closely and the crowd holding its breath, the judges’ scorecards were read out.
The verdict: a unanimous decision victory for Jonathan “Worldwide” Tetteh.
The result crowned Tetteh as the new WBA Africa Light Heavyweight Champion and marked the first professional defeat of Macbones’ career.

- Freezy Macbones: Falls to 11–1, left to reflect on a moment of indiscipline that may have cost him a continental title.
As Tetteh celebrated under the floodlights, belt held high, the night stood as a reminder of boxing’s unforgiving nature, where focus, discipline and composure can matter just as much as skill.
For Ghanaian boxing, it was a historic and unforgettable evening.
