The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has filed a motion at the Accra High Court challenging the GHS 50 million bail imposed on him by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).
The motion, filed on May 30, 2025, by his legal team at Marfo & Associates, argues that the bail conditions are “excessive” and intended to prevent his release. The application calls on the court to review and potentially reduce the bail terms.
The case is scheduled for hearing on Tuesday, June 3, at 9:00 am.

Chairman Wontumi was detained as part of an ongoing criminal investigation and later transferred to the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) headquarters in Accra.
In a dramatic turn on Friday, May 30, senior party figures including former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin were granted access to the NIB Ridge premises — but left without seeing Wontumi.
The NPP leadership has expressed frustration and alarm over the restricted access, calling the situation unprecedented. Deputy General Secretary Haruna Mohammed, speaking on Channel One, questioned the transparency of Wontumi’s detention and drew comparisons to past cases where political detainees were accessible to party leadership.
“This is not the standard we know,” Mohammed said. “When Koku Anyidohu was held by the BNI, President Mahama and his team were allowed to visit. What’s changed now?”
The mystery around Wontumi’s whereabouts, combined with his court motion, adds a fresh layer to an unfolding political and legal drama that is stirring tension within the ruling party.
