Wontumi Arrested by EOCO After CID Interrogation Over Galamsey Allegations

New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi-Boasiako — widely known as “Chairman Wontumi” — has been arrested by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) following fresh suspicions related to illegal mining.

The dramatic arrest occurred on Tuesday, May 27, moments after Wontumi exited the headquarters of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) in Accra, where he had been undergoing further interrogation over his alleged involvement in illegal mining activities, particularly in protected forest reserves.

Sources close to the investigation say Wontumi had honoured a directive to return to the CID as part of his bail conditions after turning himself in the day before. But as he was leaving the premises, EOCO operatives moved in and took him into custody.

The arrest signals an escalation in legal scrutiny over the NPP chairman’s alleged role in illegal small-scale mining operations — commonly known as galamsey — including encroachments into forest reserves without authorisation.

Details regarding EOCO’s specific charges or the next steps in the investigation remain unclear. However, the agency’s involvement suggests potential financial or organised crime dimensions to the case that go beyond environmental violations.

Wontumi, a high-profile political figure and vocal NPP stalwart in the ruling party’s stronghold region, has consistently denied any wrongdoing. His legal team has not yet issued a formal response following the EOCO arrest.
