Joshua Karry Arthur, the prime suspect in the murder of Professor Mawuadem Amedeker, a senior lecturer at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), has been remanded into police custody by the Winneba Magistrate Court.
Arthur was arrested on May 22 at the professor’s residence in Gyahadze, Effutu Municipality, following the mysterious disappearance of Prof. Amedeker, who had been missing for several weeks. The lecturer’s family and colleagues reported his disappearance to the police, sparking an intensive search.
Authorities later discovered the professor’s lifeless body buried just metres from his home. The remains were exhumed and taken to the Trauma and Specialist Hospital mortuary in Winneba for autopsy and preservation.

In connection with the case, police recovered several items believed to belong to the deceased, including a laptop, a 50-inch television, two Samsung smartphones, and a Toyota Fortuner car key.
The shocking nature of the killing has deeply unsettled the Gyahadze community. To restore calm, the Effutu Divisional Police Command has deployed additional officers to the area.
ACP Ibrahim Opoku, Divisional Commander, disclosed that the police acted promptly after receiving the disappearance report on May 21. Initial investigations involved a young man who was later absent during a follow-up visit, prompting further searches that led to the grim discovery at the professor’s residence.
The case remains under active investigation as the police continue to gather evidence.
