Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, the Defence Minister-designate, has pledged to enhance Ghana’s defence systems to address the escalating threat of terrorism in the West African sub-region.
Speaking during his vetting before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Tuesday, January 28, Dr. Omane Boamah emphasized the urgent need for modern security infrastructure, with a focus on advancing Ghana’s Fractional Orbital Bombardment Systems (FOBS).
Terrorism has caught up with us, and successive governments have done well in curbing it. However, there are reports of sleeper cells, and we need the FOBs to help secure our borders,” he stated.
He highlighted that Ghana’s extensive borders—spanning over 2,000 kilometers—make it imperative to adopt cutting-edge technologies for early detection and interception of potential threats, including incursions by terrorist groups.
“We have over 2 2,000ilomètres of borders, and if these fighters are to attack us, we need the FOBs to protect ourselves. You have my assurance that we will do everything to safeguard our dear nation,” Dr. Omane Boamah added.
The Defence Minister-designate also acknowledged the efforts of previous administrations in maintaining Ghana’s peace and stability but noted that the current security environment requires proactive measures and innovative solutions to protect the nation.
His commitment to bolstering Ghana’s defence systems comes amid growing concerns over the spread of terrorism across West Africa, with several neighboring countries grappling with insurgencies. Dr. Omane Boamah’s assurance signals a renewed focus on securing Ghana’s borders and safeguarding its citizens.
