Weija Dam Spillage Begins: Ghana Water Warns Residents to Evacuate

The management of Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has officially announced the commencement of controlled spillage from the Weija Dam, citing rising water levels as the rainy season intensifies.

In a statement signed by Stanley Martey, Head of Communications at GWL, the public—especially residents living downstream—has been urged to evacuate immediately to avoid any potential disaster.

According to GWL, the current water level at the Weija Dam is 45 feet, just two feet shy of its maximum safe operating level of 47 feet. Officials say the water level is rising steadily and is being monitored hourly. As a safety measure to protect the structural integrity of the dam and prevent flooding-related disasters, GWL has begun minimal spillage of excess water.

GWL has issued a strong caution to residents of low-lying communities downstream to evacuate immediately. The management has also advised the Ga West Municipal Assembly to desilt the estuary and clear refuse along the course of the river to allow unimpeded flow of excess water into the sea.

The communities likely to be affected by the spillage include:

  • Tetegu
  • Oblogo
  • Pambros Salt
  • Lower McCarthy Hill
  • Lower Weija
  • Bojo Beach
  • Adakope and surrounding areas.

GWL says it has informed key stakeholders, including:

  • The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO)
  • National Security
  • Traditional authorities of Weija, Oblogo, Tetegu, and Gbawe
  • Opinion leaders
  • Institutions and organizations with properties in the affected areas

The statement emphasized the need for cooperation from the public, urging residents to comply fully with safety instructions issued by NADMO and the municipal assemblies.

“We kindly request that all affected residents remain cooperative and adhere to any safety instructions issued by the municipal assembly to ensure their safety and prevent any untoward incidents,” the statement read.

GWL is taking proactive steps to prevent a repeat of past flood-related disasters and has assured the public that the situation is under close observation.

Residents are advised to stay alert, follow official updates, and prioritize their safety during this period.
