We Don’t Know Chairman Wontumi’s Whereabouts – NPP

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has admitted it is unaware of the current location of its Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, following reports of his detention and transfer to the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB).

The uncertainty surrounding Wontumi’s whereabouts escalated on Friday, May 30, after top party officials, including former Vice President and flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, were denied access to him during a visit to the NIB headquarters in Accra.

Wontumi was reportedly moved to the NIB after being held by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) as part of an ongoing criminal investigation.

However, details about the nature of the investigation and his current status remain unclear.

Speaking on Channel One Newsroom later that day, the NPP’s Deputy General Secretary, Haruna Mohammed, expressed deep concern over the lack of access and transparency, describing the situation as “very surprising”.

“No, we have not been able to find Chairman Wontumi. This is something that is very surprising to all of us,” Mohammed stated.

Drawing comparisons with a similar case under the previous National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration, Mohammed recalled how NDC leaders were allowed to visit then-Deputy General Secretary Koku Anyidohu during his detention by the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) on treason charges.

“At that time, former President John Mahama and the party leadership were granted access to Anyidohu. I don’t know what has changed now,” he said.

Mohammed went further to accuse the current administration of mishandling high-profile cases, suggesting that political persecution might be at play.

“This government is interested in persecution, and I don’t know what they want this country to end up,” he said, voicing frustration and demanding clarity from the authorities.
