The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, has described the party’s shocking defeat in the 2024 parliamentary elections as a moment of disbelief.
“We are still in disbelief; the election outcome has left us stunned,” Mr. Kodua admitted during an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosiisen show on Tuesday, January 14.
Despite unprecedented support provided to parliamentary candidates and efforts to address past issues like candidate imposition, the NPP suffered a significant loss, winning just 88 seats compared to the 183 seats secured by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Mr. Kodua highlighted that the party undertook one of its most transparent primary election processes in history. Constituencies were given the freedom to choose their candidates, and an album validation committee was set up to promote fairness and avoid disputes.
“We made a commitment to prevent the issues of the 2020 election. I believe you can attest that we conducted the primaries transparently and efficiently,” he said.
Mr. Kodua revealed that a committee chaired by Prof. Mike Oquaye is investigating the reasons behind the party’s defeat. He expressed optimism that the findings would provide clarity and a path forward for the party.
“The committee will conduct a thorough investigation to uncover what truly transpired,” he noted.
The General Secretary attributed the party’s performance to widespread apathy within its ranks, which he said affected voter turnout and enthusiasm.
“The level of apathy that permeated the party during the 2024 elections had a significant impact,” Mr. Kodua remarked, stressing the need for unity and renewed energy within the party.
The 9th Parliament reflects a dramatic shift, with the NPP’s previous slim majority evaporating into a minority position. The party is now left with 88 seats, alongside four independent MPs, while one seat remains undecided due to an Electoral Commission dispute.
Despite the challenges, Mr. Kodua remains hopeful, emphasising the party’s resilience and commitment to rebuilding for future success.
