Water Shortage Hits Tamale

Residents in the Northern Regional capital, Tamale, have been grappling with a severe water crisis since the start of the new year, as boreholes and other water sources in the area have run dry.

The situation follows a reported mechanical fault at the Dalun Water Treatment Plant, which supplies water to Tamale and surrounding communities. The issue, which occurred on New Year’s Eve, has disrupted water supply to areas such as Sagnarigu, Lamashegu, Gumbihini, and Vittin.

The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) released a statement on January 2, 2025, acknowledging the crisis and assuring residents that engineers were working around the clock to resolve the problem. Despite these assurances, the water shortage persists, with no clear timeline for restoration.

To expedite repairs, technicians from the GWCL’s Bolgatanga and Wa offices have been dispatched to assist their Tamale counterparts.

The prolonged shortage has forced residents to queue at old wells, boreholes, and nearby rivers in search of water. In some cases, families have travelled several kilometres to neighbouring communities to fetch water.

Businesses in the city, especially restaurants, launderettes, and food vendors, have been severely impacted, with many scaling down operations or temporarily closing.

Hospitals and clinics in Tamale are relying on limited reservoir supplies, raising concerns about hygiene and patient care.

Residents have expressed frustration over the lack of consistent updates from the GWCL, describing the situation as dire.

One resident at Choggu lamented, “We have been left in the dark. The water company must be more transparent and provide us with a clear plan to resolve this issue.”

Others have called for immediate government intervention to address what they describe as a looming humanitarian crisis.
