VIDEO: “Marriage Is Not a Wedding”: Archbishop Duncan-Williams Slams Costly Ceremonies

The General Overseer of Action Chapel International Ministry, Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams, has delivered a blunt and thought-provoking message, urging couples, especially young people, to rethink extravagant weddings that leave marriages burdened with debt from day one.

Addressing his congregation, the renowned cleric warned against starting married life under financial pressure, describing it as a dangerous foundation for any union.

“You don’t want to begin your marriage with debt,” he cautioned. “You go on honeymoon, and the phones start ringing. The woman who supplied the chairs is calling for her money. Another call comes from the one who provided the drinks. Before you realise, your peace is gone.”

Archbishop Duncan-Williams argued that many couples prioritise ceremonies over substance, mistaking weddings for marriage itself.

“Marriage is not a wedding,” he stressed. “Love doesn’t pay bills. Love doesn’t do provisioning.”

He proposed a radical shift in mindset, calling for simple, modest marriage ceremonies conducted in church without the trappings of lavish receptions, bridal trains, or social pressure.

“We can have five or ten marriages on a Sunday morning. Everybody comes, exchanges rings, we pronounce the blessing, and they go home and live their lives,” he said. “No best man, no bridesmaid, no reception.”

The Archbishop questioned the logic of spending huge sums on weddings while lacking basic financial stability.

“Some of you don’t even have money to rent a one-bedroom apartment, yet you want a wedding. What is wrong with you?” he asked. “That mindset is sick.”

He further described weddings as a financial liability for those still building wealth, noting that extravagant ceremonies only make sense for people who are already financially secure.

“A wedding is a liability to those still trying to build wealth. It is an asset only to those who have already made their money,” he explained.

Addressing single women, Archbishop Duncan-Williams urged them to abandon societal pressure surrounding white weddings.

“You don’t want a white dress; you want a husband,” he declared. “Stop this obsession with weddings.”

He also cautioned against encouraging financially unprepared couples to marry, insisting that financial readiness is essential for marital stability.

“If people don’t have money, they shouldn’t marry,” he said, while clarifying that he was not discouraging marriage itself, but irresponsible preparation.

His passionate remarks sparked lively reactions in church, as he challenged congregants to rethink cultural norms and embrace a more practical, purpose-driven approach to marriage.

“Stop all this wedding, wedding,” he charged. “Stop it.”
