VIDEO: Ghana Armed Forces Engineers Assess Asuokow Community for Urgent Intervention

The Minister of Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, has disclosed that engineers from the Ghana Armed Forces have undertaken an assessment of the Asuokow community in the Eastern Region, following concerns over schoolchildren being forced to cross a dangerous water body to access education.

This development comes after a directive from President John Dramani Mahama, who called for an urgent resolution to the issue after a viral video highlighted the risks faced by the children.

In a Facebook post on Monday, February 10, Dr. Omane Boamah reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety of the schoolchildren and finding a lasting solution to the challenge.

“Engineers of the Ghana Armed Forces have already visited Asuokow community (where young school children have to cross this water body to access school) in the Eastern Region,” he stated.

The minister emphasized that immediate steps are being taken to address the issue and ensure that children in the area have safe and uninterrupted access to education.

“As President John Dramani Mahama assured Ghanaians, we’re working to permanently and urgently resolve the challenge the people and the schoolchildren of Asuokow are facing,” he added.

The visit by the military engineers marks the beginning of a broader intervention aimed at providing a safer alternative for the schoolchildren. This move underscores the government’s dedication to improving access to education and protecting vulnerable communities from avoidable risks.

Residents of Asuokow have welcomed the government’s swift response, expressing hope that a sustainable solution will be implemented to prevent future tragedies. The Ministry of Defence and other relevant stakeholders are expected to outline concrete steps in the coming weeks to address the situation effectively.
