A heavy downpour on Wednesday evening brought large parts of Accra to a standstill, leaving thousands of commuters and motorists stranded for hours as floodwaters submerged major roads across the capital.

The rains, which hit on June 3, rendered several key routes impassable, triggering severe traffic congestion and forcing vehicles into long, unmoving queues.

One of the worst-hit areas was the Ashaiman Underbridge, a critical transport link connecting Ashaiman to surrounding communities such as Sakumono, Kanewu and Adjei Kojo. The stretch was completely overwhelmed by floodwaters, cutting off access and disrupting movement in and out of the area.

The situation was replicated across other parts of the city, where intense waterlogging slowed traffic flow and overwhelmed already congested alternative routes.

Motorists and passengers were left with little choice but to endure the gridlock, with some commuters reportedly spending more than five hours trying to navigate their way home.

The flooding once again highlights Accra’s recurring drainage challenges, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall, as poor drainage systems and unchecked development continue to exacerbate the situation.

Residents have repeatedly called for urgent and sustained interventions to address the city’s flooding problems, warning that without decisive action, such disruptions will remain a regular occurrence during the rainy season.

As of late Wednesday night, traffic remained heavy in several areas, with many commuters still struggling to reach their destinations.
