VIDEO: Archbishop Duncan-Williams Backs Pentecost Pastor’s Ban on Wedding Receptions

The General Overseer of Action Chapel International Ministry, Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams, has thrown his full support behind the Church of Pentecost’s decision to ban wedding receptions, describing lavish ceremonies as a major financial trap that burdens couples before marriage even begins.

Delivering a passionate message to his congregation, Archbishop Duncan-Williams said starting marriage with debt is dangerous and unnecessary, stressing that many marital struggles are rooted in poor financial decisions made during weddings.

“You don’t want to begin your marriage with debt,” he cautioned. “You go on honeymoon, and the phones start ringing. The woman who supplied the chairs is calling. Another one who provided the drinks is asking for her money. Before you realise, your peace is gone.”

The Archbishop strongly criticised the obsession with white weddings and expensive receptions, insisting that marriage is not the same as a wedding.

“Marriage is not a wedding,” he declared. “Love doesn’t pay bills. Love doesn’t provide. Love doesn’t pay rent.”

He argued that many young people prioritise public display over preparedness, noting that some couples spend heavily on ceremonies despite lacking basic financial stability.

“Some of you don’t even have money to rent a one-bedroom apartment, yet you want a wedding. What is wrong with you?” he asked bluntly. “That mindset is sick.”

Archbishop Duncan-Williams suggested a simpler, more practical approach to marriage within the church: short ceremonies focused on blessings rather than celebration.

“We can have five or ten marriages on a Sunday morning,” he said. “No best man, no bridesmaid, no reception. Exchange rings, pronounce the blessing, go home, live your life, build your family.”

He described weddings as a liability for those still building wealth, adding that elaborate ceremonies only make sense for people who are already financially established.

“If you have money to do a wedding, fine. But for those building their lives, a wedding is a liability, not an asset,” he said.

His remarks align closely with a recent directive by the Mpoasei District of the Church of Pentecost in the Dansoman Area, where the District Pastor, Gilbert John Ayamah, announced a ban on wedding receptions following church marriages.

In an exclusive interview with puretvonline, Pastor Ayamah explained that the decision was taken to ease the financial burden that discourages many members from marrying.

“Our checks showed that elders and presiding elders often had to support members financially to organise wedding receptions,” he revealed. “It had become an overwhelming burden.”

According to him, the ban, though previously existing, had been overlooked over time and is now being firmly enforced after consultations with church leadership. The decision also extends to ceremonies following naming events held at the church.

Pastor Ayamah emphasised that marriage itself is simple and sacred, but societal pressure has made it unnecessarily expensive.

“The most important thing is that the man can provide for his family and present the marriage to the church for a blessing,” he said. “There is no need for extra costs that lead to financial hardship.”
