Veep Slams Teacher–Student Sexual Misconduct as “Disgraceful”

Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has issued a stern condemnation of the increasing cases of inappropriate sexual relationships between teachers and students in Ghana’s second-cycle institutions, describing such acts as a stain on the teaching profession.

Her comments follow the circulation of two viral videos, one allegedly involving a headmaster of KNUST Senior High School in a compromising situation with a female student, and another showing a male teacher at Okadjakrom SHS engaged in sexual activity with a student.

Speaking at the Ghana Teacher Prize Ceremony at the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) on Sunday, October 5, 2025, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang said the government will not hesitate to sanction teachers who exploit their positions of trust.

“Leadership cannot ignore those teachers in positions of power who abuse our young pupils. The recent event involving one of our teachers in a management position is a case in point,” she stated.
“Transfers are not punishment, and so they should never be used against those who abuse our children, betray their trust, and disgrace our profession.”

The Vice President stressed that teachers occupy positions of trust, protection, and empathy, and any abuse of that trust will attract swift consequences.

She also announced plans to revive Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs) to enhance parental involvement in safeguarding learners and strengthen collaboration with the National Teaching Council to raise professional standards nationwide.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang concluded by urging teachers to embrace mentorship and lifelong learning, positioning themselves as role models worthy of the public trust they hold.
