The United States Ambassador to Ghana, Virginia Palmer, has reaffirmed the strength of U.S.–Ghana relations, despite growing concerns over a newly imposed 10% U.S. tariff on Ghanaian exports.
Ambassador Palmer made the comments after a closed-door meeting with Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, held in Accra. The hour-long engagement focused on the potential economic impact of the new tariff policy and its broader implications for bilateral trade.
Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Ambassador Palmer acknowledged Ghana’s concerns but was quick to express confidence in the continued strength of the longstanding relationship between the two nations.

“I had a great conversation with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, and we talked about how the relationship with Ghana is very strong nd how we can keep it going that way,” she said. “We also discussed the specifics of the tariffs and what both the United States and Ghana can do to improve the relationship.”
While the U.S. has yet to clarify the full scope of the tariff’s impact, particularly on key Ghanaian exports like cocoa, textiles, and fashion, Ambassador Palmer indicated that constructive engagement was ongoing.
In response to questions about whether Ghana might benefit from certain provisions under the new tariff framework, she said: “I hope Ghana will get some benefits vis-à-vis its competitors.”
The Ghanaian government has not yet issued a formal statement on the outcome of the meeting. However, trade experts warn that the new tariffs could pose significant challenges for small and medium enterprises (SMEs), particularly those in the fashion and textile sector, which has seen growing exports to the U.S. under programmeses like AGOA.
Ambassador Palmer’s reassurance comes at a time when Ghana is seeking to diversify its export base and deepen trade partnerships in the face of global economic headwinds.
