TikTok US chief Security Officer To Testify Before US House On September 15
TikTok U.S. Chief Security Officer Will Farrell is set to testify before the U.S. House Select Committee on China on September 15, marking the first public appearance by a senior TikTok U.S. executive before the House since the company's landmark restructuring earlier this year.
The hearing is expected to give lawmakers an opportunity to question the company over Chinese involvement in TikTok, data privacy, cybersecurity and the ownership structure of the popular short-video platform following its separation from Chinese parent company ByteDance.
Farrell, who oversees TikTok U.S.'s data privacy and cybersecurity operations, will face questions from members of the bipartisan committee amid ongoing concerns about national security and the handling of American users' data.
The testimony comes months after ByteDance completed a deal in January 2026 to separate TikTok's U.S. operations from its global business, a move designed to comply with U.S. legislation that required the company to divest the platform or face a nationwide ban.
Although ByteDance retains a 19.9 per cent stake in the U.S. business, the company has released limited details about the restructuring, prompting lawmakers to seek greater transparency over the agreement and the role played by U.S. President Donald Trump in facilitating the deal.
Under the new ownership arrangement, TikTok's U.S. operations are now managed by an American-owned entity known as TikTok USDS Joint Venture LLC.
The joint venture is controlled by three principal investors: cloud computing giant Oracle, private equity firm Silver Lake, and Abu Dhabi-based investment company MGX.
The hearing follows years of bipartisan scrutiny of TikTok over concerns that ByteDance could be compelled under Chinese law to share user data with the Chinese government—a claim the company has consistently denied.
In 2024, the U.S. Congress passed legislation requiring ByteDance to divest TikTok's American operations or face a ban, citing national security concerns over potential foreign influence and access to sensitive user information.
House Select Committee on China Chairman John Moolenaar had previously indicated that leaders of the newly established U.S. joint venture would appear before Congress in 2026 to explain the company's governance and security safeguards.
However, TikTok U.S. Chief Executive Officer Adam Presser is not expected to attend the September 15 hearing.
Meanwhile, TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew has also been invited by Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley to testify alongside other social media executives on children's online safety, although a date for that hearing has yet to be announced.
The upcoming congressional hearing is expected to provide lawmakers with their first detailed opportunity to examine TikTok's new U.S. ownership structure and assess whether the changes sufficiently address longstanding national security and data protection concerns.
