TikTok to Train Ghanaian Creators, GCB Bank Opens First Local Payout Channel

Ghana’s digital content creators are set to benefit from a groundbreaking partnership that will, for the first time, see TikTok fly a team into the country to train and build the capacity of local talents while opening new channels for monetisation.

Communication Minister Sam Nartey George disclosed this development during an interview on JoyNews’ PM Express on September 30, noting that the move is part of the government’s strategy to strengthen Ghana’s digital economy.

According to him, TikTok has agreed to launch a capacity-building programme in Ghana to help creators sharpen their skills, improve content quality, and position themselves for sponsorship and brand collaborations.

“We’re getting TikTok to, for the first time on the continent, fly in a team to come and help our content creators do capacity building for our content creators to improve their monetisation,” he stated.

In addition, the Ministry has secured a deal with GCB Bank to establish a direct payment channel for TikTok earnings, solving one of the most pressing challenges faced by creators—the inability to receive revenue locally due to restrictions on platforms like PayPal.

“In the absence of PayPal in the country, which we’re also working on with the Bank of Ghana, TikTok and GCB Bank will now provide a payment channel for our content creators,” Mr George explained.

This initiative marks a major breakthrough for Ghana’s creative and digital sector, where many influencers, streamers, and digital entrepreneurs have long struggled to monetise their craft despite having significant followings. It also positions Ghana as a regional leader in supporting the growth of its online creator economy.

Beyond TikTok, Mr George revealed that the Ministry is advancing 15 pieces of legislation to strengthen the innovation and startup space, attract venture capital, and create a safer digital environment.

These include:

  • An Innovation and Startup Bill to regulate and stimulate Ghana’s startup ecosystem.
  • A misinformation and disinformation bill, aimed at tackling hate speech, fake news, and harmful content across both traditional and digital platforms.

Addressing concerns about potential censorship, the minister dismissed claims that the government intends to regulate social media usage.

“At no point in time have we said we want to regulate social media. We simply said that the fact that you use new media for broadcast does not put you above the ethics of the broadcast journalist. You must hold yourselves to the same standards that traditional media hold,” he clarified.

Instead, he emphasised that the government prefers platforms and associations to self-regulate, while the state provides frameworks to ensure safety and accountability.
