Three Killed as Gunmen Attack Bus at Wulugu, North East Region

A tragic attack by unidentified gunmen at Wulugu in the North East Region has left three passengers dead and a bus completely destroyed by fire.

The victims were part of a group travelling from Kumasi to Garu when their bus developed a mechanical fault near Wulugu. The driver, in an attempt to secure spare parts, left for Walewale, leaving the stranded passengers behind. During his absence, armed assailants stormed the scene, set the vehicle ablaze, and executed three passengers.

Upon receiving a distress call, police officers arrived at the scene and discovered the bodies of three young men, believed to be in their 20s. Two were found lying in a pool of blood by the roadside, while the third was located approximately 200 meters away from the attack site.

The bodies have been transported to the Bolgatanga Hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy, as authorities work to identify their relatives. Two of the victims have been identified as belonging to the Frafra ethnic group, while the third, an Ashanti man, was reportedly travelling to Bolgatanga.

Eyewitness accounts indicate that upon hearing gunshots, some passengers fled toward the Wulugu community.

However, the assailants pursued and killed three of them.

At the crime scene, police retrieved four empty shells suspected to be from AK-47 rifles. Security forces have since secured the area, ensuring the safety of surviving passengers who sought refuge in nearby homes.

Although the motive behind the attack remains uncertain, reports suggest it may be linked to the ongoing Bawku conflict. This latest incident brings the death toll to 49 since the resurgence of violence in October 2024.

Authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant as investigations continue to apprehend the perpetrators and prevent further violence.
