”The US Dollar Is Not Our Currency”- Ato Forson Rallies Nation to Defend Cedi
The Minister of Finance, Hon. Cassiel Ato Forson, has made a passionate appeal to Ghanaians to rally behind the Ghana cedi, describing it as the “heartbeat of our sovereignty” and the ultimate emblem of national pride.
Speaking at the 60th Anniversary Celebration of the Ghana Cedi, held in Accra, Dr Forson said the milestone marks not only six decades of monetary evolution but also a renewed call to preserve the integrity and dignity of the nation’s currency.
Addressing a high-profile audience including the Vice President of the Republic, the Speaker of Parliament, the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, members of the diplomatic corps, industry leaders, and former finance ministers, the minister described the cedi as “more than just a medium of exchange—it is the story of Ghana itself.”

“The Ghana cedi represents the pride of our nation; it is our heritage,” Dr Forson declared. “Since 1965, it has not just been a store of value but a symbol of our independence and resilience as a people.”
He traced the currency’s history from the First Republic through years of economic turbulence, inflation, redenomination, and recovery, noting that the cedi has remained steadfast as the sole legal tender of the Republic.
Dr Forson emphasised that the 60th anniversary theme — “The Cedi at 60: Symbol of Our Sovereignty, Stability, and Economic Resilience” — captures the enduring strength of Ghana’s economy and the faith required to sustain it.
“This anniversary marks a new dawn for the Ghana cedi,” he said. “We must all have faith in our dear currency. It is not just the government’s responsibility—it is a collective duty.”
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to fiscal discipline, assuring that efforts to stabilise and strengthen the cedi remain a top priority.
“As managers of the economy, we have remained steadfast in our duty to ensure a strong and stable currency,” he noted. “The gains we have made must be maintained. Government will stay the course.”
The Finance Minister issued a strong caution against the growing trend of pricing goods and services in foreign currencies, particularly the U.S. dollar, calling the practice “an act that undermines our sovereignty.”
“Let me repeat this: as Ghanaians, the Ghana cedi remains the only legal tender. The U.S. dollar is not our currency,” he said firmly. “The continuous pricing of goods and services in U.S. dollars will only hurt us. Let’s stop it—and let’s stop it now.”
Dr Forson urged citizens, businesses, and institutions to embrace economic patriotism, warning that the nation’s dependence on foreign currencies fuels instability and weakens the cedi’s global perception.
The minister ended his address with an impassioned call for unity and civic responsibility in protecting the national currency.
“The cedi is the wealth we have. Let us protect it, trade with it, and defend it,” he said. “Let us carry the cedi not as a burden, but as a badge of economic independence.”
As the celebration concluded, the words emblazoned on the backdrop of the event hall echoed the minister’s message:
“Ghana Cedi, Our Heritage. Ghana Cedi, Our Pride.”
