“The Collective Interests of All Ghanaians Matter to Me” – Speaker Alban Bagbin

Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has pledged to prioritise the collective interests of all Ghanaians over partisan politics as he begins his term at the helm of Ghana’s legislative body.

Speaking to journalists after his swearing-in on January 7, Bagbin highlighted the importance of maintaining a balanced and unified approach, even as the National Democratic Congress (NDC) holds a significant presence in Parliament.

“I never take anything for granted because the large numbers we have coming from the NDC is also a challenge, and I should be able to get them to focus more on national interests,” he stated.

Bagbin reiterated his commitment to ensuring that parliamentary proceedings reflect the aspirations of all Ghanaians, regardless of their political affiliations.

“The collective interests of all Ghanaians, whether you are NDC, NPP, PNC, or independent, that is what matters to me, and that will be a challenge,” he added.

The speaker noted that his role requires steering lawmakers away from divisive politics and fostering a culture of collaboration to address Ghana’s pressing issues.

With the NDC commanding a significant portion of seats in the House, Bagbin acknowledged the challenge of ensuring that their influence does not overshadow the broader interests of the nation.

He expressed confidence in his ability to manage the dynamics of a politically diverse Parliament while upholding the principles of democracy.

“The task ahead is not just about legislation but about leadership—ensuring that Parliament serves as a platform for unity and progress,” Bagbin explained.
