Tema-Ada Forestry Targets 30 Million Trees as 22 Hectares Already Restored Under Tree for Life Drive
The Tema-Ada District Forestry Office says Ghana is aiming to plant 30 million trees nationwide under the Tree for Life initiative, with 22 hectares already restored through partnerships with major corporate institutions, District Forestry Manager Linda Ansah has disclosed.
Speaking to journalists during a joint tree-planting exercise with Ecobank Ghana, Ms Ansah said the nationwide campaign forms part of a broader environmental restoration effort launched under the Tree for Life programme.
“This is part of the Tree for Life initiative that was launched last year. This year, we have a target of planting 30 million trees across the country,” she said.
She explained that Ecobank’s participation formed part of a coordinated effort to achieve the national target, with the bank contributing 2,000 trees in the latest exercise.
“So this morning, we are here with Ecobank to achieve that target of 30 million trees. We are here to plant 2,000 tree species,” she noted.
Ms Ansah said Ecobank’s involvement this year follows its participation in the previous year’s campaign, highlighting growing corporate commitment to environmental restoration.
“Last year they were here, and this year they’ve come again. We want to use this medium to encourage individuals and corporate bodies to also come and help,” she added.
She stressed that collaboration remains central to achieving Ghana’s reforestation goals, especially in the face of climate change and forest degradation.
“We are inviting everyone to come and help us plant to mitigate against climate change and also restore the good nature of our forests,” she said.
Providing a breakdown of current progress, Ms Ansah revealed that several corporate partners have already made significant contributions toward the national target.
She noted that MTN Ghana and Telecel have planted 10,000 trees, while Stanbic Bank Ghana has also contributed another 10,000 trees, with Ecobank adding a further 2,000 trees.
“This gives us about 22 hectares so far,” she explained.
According to her, the Forestry Commission has demarcated a total of 24 hectares for the current phase of the project, designed to accelerate forest recovery and achieve “quick closure” of degraded lands.
“Out of the 24 hectares, we have done 22 so far 10 for Telecel, 10 for Stanbic bank, and 2 for Ecobank,” she said.
Ms Ansah emphasised that the initiative is not only about tree planting but also about long-term forest restoration and sustainability.
She reiterated the importance of sustained partnerships between government, private sector actors, and communities to ensure Ghana meets its ambitious 30 million tree target and strengthens its environmental resilience in the years ahead.
