A heated dispute over land ownership in Tamale’s business district escalated into a violent clash on Tuesday, leaving three people injured, including two with gunshot wounds, as rival groups exchanged fire.
A land ownership battle in Tamale’s central business district turned bloody on Tuesday morning when two youth groups clashed, leading to an exchange of gunfire. The altercation left two individuals with gunshot wounds and another injured after being accidentally run over by a vehicle during the chaos.
The conflict began Monday night when one group asserted ownership of the land, reportedly linked to influential New Patriotic Party (NPP) figures. They destroyed barricades set up on the site, provoking tensions with another group claiming the land belonged to their family member.
An eyewitness described the events : “Around 8 pm last night, one group came and said the land was for Samba, so they were taking over. Another group insisted it was for their brother.
Instead of leaving, the first group destroyed the cordon and stayed on the land overnight.”
Tensions boiled over early Tuesday morning when the opposing group returned to confront the intruders, sparking an exchange of gunfire. “When the shooting started, two people were hit by bullets, and a third person hiding behind a vehicle got accidentally run over,” the eyewitness added.
The injured individuals were rushed to the Tamale Teaching Hospital for treatment.
Police in the Northern Region have been informed and are investigating the incident to determine the rightful ownership of the land and prevent further violence.
The clash has disrupted business activity in the area, with traders and residents calling for calm and immediate intervention to address the underlying tensions.
