Talensi NDC Office Set Ablaze Following DCE Nomination Dispute

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) office in Talensi, located in Ghana’s Upper East Region, was destroyed in a suspected arson attack in the early hours of Saturday, April 5.

The incident occurred shortly after the announcement of John Millim Naabwomya as the party’s nominee for the position of District Chief Executive (DCE). Eyewitnesses reported the building was engulfed in flames around 2:30 a.m.

Naabwomya’s nomination has triggered sharp discontent among some party supporters, who claim he was handpicked due to his loyalty to the Paramount Chief of Talensi, Tongraan Nanlebegtang Kugbilsong, rather than through democratic grassroots processes.

Critics also allege that Naabwomya has connections with Chinese mining firms in the area, raising concerns that he may prioritise the interests of foreign companies over those of local residents.

In January this year, a petition was submitted to the party’s regional leadership urging them to reject his nomination.

Security officials are yet to identify the perpetrators of the attack, and investigations are currently underway.
