Stop Using Your Phone Number as Your MoMo PIN- MTN Warns Customers

The Chief Regulatory, Risk, and Compliance Officer of MTN Mobile Money Limited, Mr Godwin Tamakloe, has issued a strong advisory to customers, urging them to avoid using the last four digits of their mobile numbers as Mobile Money (MoMo) PINs — a habit he says is making them easy targets for fraudsters.

Speaking in an exclusive one-on-one interview with Hot FM Morning Drive hosted by Don Kwabena Prah, Mr. Tamakloe, cybercriminals and fraud syndicates have developed schemes that involve randomly guessing users’ MoMo PINs, often beginning with combinations related to customers’ phone numbers.

“Many MoMo users unknowingly expose themselves to fraud by using easily guessable PINs such as the last four digits of their phone numbers or obvious patterns like 0000, 1234, or 1111,” he explained.

Mr Tamakloe revealed that MTN’s investigations have shown that a significant number of fraud victims had weak and predictable PINs, making it easier for fraudsters to exploit their wallets through guesswork.

He therefore called on all users to take their MoMo security seriously by choosing unique and unpredictable PINs and changing them regularly.

To assist customers, Mr Tamakloe also outlined a simple step-by-step guide for changing MoMo PINs:

  1. Dial *170#
  2. Select Option 6 – My Wallet
  3. Choose Option 6 again – Change & Reset PIN
  4. Select Option 1 – Change PIN
  5. Enter your current PIN.
  6. Enter your new, more secure PIN.
  7. Confirm the new PIN.

He noted that once completed, customers will receive a confirmation message indicating a successful PIN change.

“Changing your PIN regularly and choosing complex combinations that cannot easily be predicted is the simplest yet most effective way to stay safe,” Mr Tamakloe said, emphasising MTN’s commitment to protecting its over 18 million MoMo users.

The warning comes amid growing concerns over mobile money fraud in Ghana, with fraudsters using social engineering tactics and digital tools to trick or hack into wallets.

MTN says it is intensifying its customer education efforts and enhancing security protocols to safeguard users but insists that individual responsibility remains key in the fight against MoMo fraud.
