The Tema Metropolis is grappling with a severe sanitation crisis, with a significant spillover of large suck-away systems at public places and markets, exacerbating already poor hygiene conditions.
Residents in the area have reported unbearable stench and health hazards that are disrupting daily life, particularly around the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) vicinity.
One of the most concerning issues is the spillover of sewage from suck-aways that are inadequately managed. These spillovers are not only creating a foul odour but are also contributing to the contamination of public spaces, including markets and other high-traffic areas.

The resulting stench is so overwhelming that it has led to the closure of several shops in the area, with some food vendors and local businesses feeling the economic pinch.
Emmanuel, a taxi driver who operates around the Tema Metropolis, expressed his growing concern about the health risks the situation poses. “This is not just an inconvenience; it is a health hazard. The stench is unbearable, and it feels like we’re being exposed to serious diseases. Something urgent needs to be done to address this,” he said.
In addition to the spillovers, the surrounding area is plagued by other sanitation problems. Clogged gutters, scattered litter, and overflowing rubbish bins have become an everyday sight. These unsightly conditions are only adding to the persistent odor, making it difficult for residents and businesses to carry out their daily activities.
For many food vendors, this has become a major challenge. Several of them have voiced frustrations over the unsanitary conditions, as they struggle to maintain cleanliness and hygiene in an increasingly polluted environment. One vendor, who wished to remain anonymous, explained, “I can’t run a business in these conditions. The filth is affecting my customers and, most importantly, it’s making my job impossible.”
Richard, a local shop owner, also shared his concerns. “My business, along with several others, has had to shut down because of the worsening sanitation situation. The smell is unbearable, and it’s keeping people away. If nothing is done soon, we may have to consider closing for good,” he lamented.
The situation has sparked a call for swift intervention from local authorities. Residents, vendors, and business owners alike are pleading for the Tema Metropolitan Assembly to take immediate action to address the sanitation crisis. Without a clear and effective response, the effects on public health and the local economy are expected to worsen.
As the issue continues to escalate, the demand for proper waste management, regular cleaning of public spaces, and swift repairs to malfunctioning suck-aways remains urgent.
The Tema Metropolis is in dire need of a coordinated effort to ensure the health and safety of its residents and to restore the dignity of the area’s public spaces.
