State Funeral Set for August 15 to Honour Victims of Military Helicopter Crash

President John Dramani Mahama has announced that a state funeral will be held on Friday, August 15, at the Black Star Square in Accra to honour the eight distinguished Ghanaians who perished in the devastating military helicopter crash on Wednesday, August 6, in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region.

The crash, described as one of the most tragic incidents in Ghana’s aviation history, claimed the lives of five senior government officials and three Ghana Air Force personnel.

The President, in a televised address on Thursday night, said the funeral would be the culmination of a week-long national mourning programme, aimed at paying solemn tribute to the memory, dedication, and service of the fallen patriots.

    • National Democratic Congress (NDC) Headquarters
    • Head Office of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO)

The President encouraged Ghanaians to participate in the mourning activities and honour the sacrifices made by the deceased in service to the nation.

“These were not just public servants; they were dedicated patriots who gave their all for the progress of our beloved country,” President Mahama said. “It is only fitting that we bid them farewell with dignity and national pride.”

The state funeral will honour the following individuals:

The remains of the deceased, which were severely burnt in the crash, have been sent to South Africa for DNA analysis to ensure accurate identification ahead of the funeral.

Security has been heightened around key government installations, and a national flag directive remains in place to fly all flags at half-mast throughout the mourning period.
