The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has called on newly elected Members of Parliament (MPs) to focus on addressing the pressing needs of their constituents and to be mindful of the sacrifices made by the people who entrusted them with the responsibility to represent their interests.
Speaking at an orientation session for first-time MPs on Saturday, January 11, 2025, Speaker Bagbin stressed the importance of lawmakers fulfilling their duties, highlighting the significant trust placed in them by their constituents, many of whom have invested heavily in their political journey.
“You are a role model. The lives of so many people depend on you. Don’t fail them. This is what touches my heart,” Speaker Bagbin told the MPs.
He emphasised that the electorate, particularly in rural areas, often goes to great lengths to support their representatives, not just during elections, but in their daily lives, sometimes defending them at great personal cost.
Reflecting on the responsibility MPs carry, Speaker Bagbin warned that taking their duty lightly or failing to serve their constituents adequately would not go unpunished, noting that “the Almighty God himself will not bless you” if they do not live up to their commitments.
He underscored that every action an MP takes would eventually have a direct consequence, urging them to act with integrity and dedication.
The speaker’s passionate message urged MPs to avoid complacency and to remember the many sacrifices made by the people back home, who are counting on them for effective representation in Parliament.
“Whatever you sow, you reap it. So don’t think that you do good for any other person. You do it for yourself,” Speaker Bagbin concluded, sending a strong message to the MPs about the personal and collective importance of their work.
The orientation session also covered essential parliamentary procedures and ethics, as the new MPs prepare to begin their legislative duties.
