Shop Owners Urge Government to Provide Shelters for Head Porters

Shop owners in Accra Newtown are calling on the government to urgently provide designated shelters for head porters (kayayei) who currently sleep in front of their shops.

They say the growing number of women sleeping on pavements has led to sanitation problems and raised safety concerns for both the porters and local businesses.

Accra Newtown, known for its vibrant printing industry and proximity to the Mallam Atta Market, continues to attract head porters—mostly women from northern Ghana seeking work. These women often carry heavy loads for low wages while also caring for their children. At night, many are forced to sleep outdoors, exposed to theft, harsh weather, and insecurity.

Although some shop owners allow the women to rest in front of their stores, the situation is becoming unsustainable. “I often advise them not to cook here, but they have nowhere else to go,” said Edward Ankrah, a paper retailer.

He warned that cooking activities posed a fire hazard and appealed to the government and NGOs to step in.

Jacqueline Bentil, who sells drinks and clothing, added, “It’s not safe for them or us. We need urgent action from the authorities.”

Alhassan Abubakar, Chairman of the Works Sub-Committee at the Ayawaso Central Municipal Assembly, confirmed that plans are in place to construct a shelter for the kayayei.

However, he noted that the project has been delayed due to resistance from some community members.

When approached by Channel One News, many of the head porters declined to speak for fear of eviction. One woman, Aisha, shared her experience of sleepless, rain-soaked nights on the pavement, highlighting the daily struggles they endure.

The shop owners say they are sympathetic but stressed the need for a more sustainable solution to protect the porters and ensure a safe, clean environment for all.
