The Mayor of Accra, Michael Allotey, has announced that items confiscated during the ongoing decongestion exercise in the Central Business District (CBD) will be donated to the Ghana Prisons Service, signaling a shift from the previous practice of auctioning seized goods.
The decongestion operation, spearheaded by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) in collaboration with the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly (KoKMA), commenced in the early hours of Tuesday, May 20, 2025. The initiative aims to ease congestion, enforce city by-laws, and enhance sanitation in strategic parts of the capital.
During the first day of the exercise, the task force focused on known congestion hotspots including:

- Kinbu Road to Railways
- ECG Junction to the King Tackie Tawiah Statue
- Opera Square to Adabraka
These areas are notorious for heavy street vending activities and obstructed pedestrian walkways.
Speaking to journalists at the end of Day 1, Mayor Allotey made it clear that enforcement would only intensify moving forward.
He also confirmed that, unlike in the past, the confiscated goods would no longer be auctioned but rather put to use in support of national institutions.
“Tomorrow, you are not going to have it this way. I will pack all these things for the prison when I come tomorrow. Today is your lucky day,” he warned.
Mayor Allotey emphasized that the exercise was not a one-off initiative but part of a long-term strategy to restore order and free movement within the city.
“This exercise is not a nine-day wonder; we will be on the streets until we ensure that the roads are clear,” he stated.
