Sapeiman Bust: National Security Collaborating with US Embassy to Authenticate Fake Dollar Notes – Interior Minister

Interior Minister Muntaka Mubarak has revealed that Ghana’s National Security is working with the United States Embassy to verify the authenticity of a cache of suspected counterfeit U.S. dollars recovered during a major criminal bust in Sapeiman, a suburb of Accra, in March 2025.

The bust—described as one of Ghana’s most sophisticated counterfeiting operations in recent memory—also uncovered fake gold bars, Ghana cedis, and money boxes confirmed to be genuine property of the Bank of Ghana.

“The lead suspect is not a Ghanaian,” the minister told Parliament on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, “but investigations show he has local collaborators aiding this criminal enterprise.”

Muntaka explained that the U.S. authorities had formally written to Ghanaian security agencies, seeking support in the investigation due to the involvement of the American currency.

He added that the Bank of Ghana and the Ghana Gold Board are conducting joint verifications to authenticate the gold bars and Ghanaian currency retrieved at the crime scene.

“The operation followed days of intelligence gathering. Unfortunately, the prime suspect, known only as Alhaji, managed to flee just before the security swoop,” the minister said.

The high-profile raid, which occurred in February 2025, exposed a counterfeiting ring operating behind a battery-charging shop, disguised as a derelict roadside facility.

Investigators discovered ten 40-foot containers stuffed with counterfeit Ghanaian and U.S. currency, alongside gold-coated metal bars that peeled away to reveal silver-coloured metal underneath.

According to Richard Jakpa, Director of Special Operations at the National Security Secretariat, two additional containers believed to be part of the operation vanished shortly before the raid.

“These were not amateur criminals,” Jakpa noted. “The syndicate used advanced methods of concealment and operated at a scale we’ve rarely seen.”

Among the most startling finds was the presence of authentic Bank of Ghana cash boxes. Jakpa clarified that while the cash inside some boxes was counterfeit, the boxes themselves were verified as genuine BoG property, raising further questions about possible insider involvement.

Authorities have now launched a full-scale manhunt for “Alhaji”, who is believed to be the kingpin of the operation. He is said to have strong international connections and is being pursued through regional and international security channels.

Muntaka assured Parliament that Ghana’s security services are cooperating with international partners to unravel the full extent of the network and bring all collaborators to justice.

“We are not dealing with isolated criminals here. This is organised crime with potentially transnational links,” the interior minister cautioned.
