The Member of Parliament for Akuapem North, Sammi Awuku, has commended President John Dramani Mahama for his recent appointments, particularly for prioritising youth inclusion and competence in key government positions.
In an interview on Adom FM, the former CEO of the National Lottery Authority (NLA) described the President’s decisions as forward-thinking, emphasising the importance of involving young and capable politicians in governance.
Awuku specifically lauded the appointments of George Opare Addo as Minister for Youth and Sports and Sammy Gyamfi to head the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC), calling them exemplary choices that reflect the President’s commitment to fostering youthful leadership.
“Look at George Opare Addo; he is a solid guy. He’s been the youth organiser, DC, and now the minister for youth and sports. Sammy Gyamfi, too, has been appointed to oversee the PMMC. A solid guy, and I reject anyone who says he is too small for the position. Who else do you expect should be appointed after toiling for his party?” Awuku stated.
Awuku praised the inclusion of young politicians, noting that their expertise and energy could greatly enhance governance. “The President is showing that he values competence and is empowering the next generation of leaders,” he added.
He also defended the appointment of his successor at the NLA, Alhaji Mohammed, highlighting the role of the authority in supporting Ghana’s economy and vulnerable populations. “When I was appointed to oversee the NLA, there were concerns, but I did my best, and Alhaji is continuing the good work. The profit made from the lottery supports the economy and helps the needy.”
