Road Crashes Claim 1,937 Lives, Leave 10,957 Injured Between January and August 2025 – NRSA

The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has revealed that 1,937 people lost their lives in road crashes across Ghana between January and August 2025, underscoring the country’s deepening road safety crisis.

According to the latest figures, a total of 16,348 vehicles were involved in crashes during the period, resulting in 10,957 injuries and 9,626 reported cases. The breakdown showed 5,515 commercial vehicles, 6,647 private vehicles, and 4,186 motorcycles involved.

Disclosing the statistics during a working tour by Deputy Minister of Transport Dorcas Affo-Toffey, Acting Director-General of the NRSA Abraham Amaliba identified speeding as the leading cause of accidents, accounting for over 80 per cent of cases. He also highlighted indiscriminate pedestrian activity, hawking, poor road engineering, and weak maintenance as aggravating factors.

To tackle the crisis, the NRSA has proposed amendments to the Road Traffic Regulations (LI 2180) to enhance the timely removal of broken-down vehicles and has renewed calls for automated traffic enforcement to curb speeding. The Authority also plans to intensify road safety education, integrate safety measures into the work of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs), and encourage helmet use among motorcyclists.

Despite these efforts, Mr Amaliba raised alarm over inadequate funding, stressing that limited resources undermine the NRSA’s capacity to roll out critical interventions. He appealed for government support and financial clearance for staff replacements to sustain the fight against road crashes.

Deputy Minister Affo-Toffey commended the NRSA’s work and pledged the Ministry’s commitment to reinforcing safety measures.

Her tour also extended to the Ghana Railway Development Authority (GRDA) and the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA). At the GRDA, Acting Chief Executive Dr Frederick Apoh announced that operations on the Tema–Mpakadan railway line will begin on October 1, 2025, while work continues on the Tema–Nsawam and Takoradi–Nsuta projects. He emphasized the job creation potential of the rail sector.

At the DVLA, Acting Chief Executive Julius N. Kotey disclosed that a new sticker system has increased issuance from 2,000 to 12,000, significantly boosting revenue. He further revealed that by 2026, all vehicle number plates will be replaced to meet global standards. The DVLA has also rolled out new systems in offices at Adenta, Bole, Dormaa, Bechem, and Asamankese to enhance efficiency.

Mrs Affo-Toffey assured all agencies of government’s support to strengthen service delivery and contribute meaningfully to national development.
