Prof. Ransford Gyampo, the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Shippers Authority, has expressed his disappointment over the removal of Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.
In a heartfelt Facebook post, he acknowledged Dampare’s significant contributions to policing and wished the decision had not been made.
However, he also stated that he respects the judgement of President John Dramani Mahama.

“Now settling with the fact that Dr. Dampare has been replaced. His huge legacy in policing is there for all to see. I wish this hadn’t happened, but I respect the judgement of the president. Well done, Dr. Dampare. Congratulations, IGP Yohunu,” he wrote.
Dr. Gyampo’s statement comes in the wake of President Mahama’s decision to relieve Dr. Dampare of his duties and appoint Commissioner of Police (COP) Christian Tetteh Yohunu as his successor.
The announcement was made on March 13 by presidential spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu, who stated that the decision was made in accordance with Articles 91 and 202 of the 1992 Constitution and in consultation with the Council of State.
COP Yohunu, a seasoned police officer with forty years of service, is expected to lead a transformation agenda within the Ghana Police Service. His appointment has been met with mixed reactions. While some police officers have celebrated his leadership, others have expressed reservations over the abrupt departure of Dr. Dampare.
The transition was marked by jubilant scenes at the police headquarters, where officers welcomed IGP Yohunu with loud cheers and even monetary gifts—an unusual display of approval for his leadership. However, some officers were critical of Dr. Dampare’s tenure, branding him a “tyrant” and claiming his leadership style was oppressive.
As the dust settles on this leadership change, the nation is left to ponder what lies ahead. Will IGP Yohunu live up to the high expectations set before him, or will his leadership ignite new debates? Only time will tell.
