Ghanaians are set to pay more for electricity and water following a new tariff adjustment announced by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) for the second quarter of 2025.
Effective immediately, electricity tariffs have gone up by 14.75%, while water tariffs have increased by 4.02%. The Commission says the decision stems from its quarterly review process, which considers the cedi’s exchange rate against the dollar, inflation, the fuel mix used in power generation, and other economic indicators.
A key driver behind the increase is PURC’s move to recover 50% of an outstanding GHS976 million revenue owed to utility providers from 2024. The remaining half will be spread over the rest of the year to ease pressure on consumers.

The Commission used an exchange rate of GHS15.6974 to the US dollar and a projected inflation rate of 22.49% to calculate the latest adjustments. Meanwhile, gas prices for power generation slightly decreased to USD 7.6289/MMBtu, down from USD 7.8368/MMBtu last year.
PURC justified the hikes as necessary to avoid under-recovery, which could lead to power outages and water supply disruptions due to the financial strain on utility companies.
“Recovering the full amount would have required much steeper hikes,” the PURC stated, “but we’ve opted for a phased approach to minimise the impact on Ghanaians while safeguarding essential services.”
The new rates have taken effect, and households are advised to prepare for increased utility bills in the coming weeks.
