Prophets Urged to Exercise Restraint in Delivering Prophecies

A former president of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference and Bishop Emeritus of the Konongo-Mampong Catholic Diocese, Most Rev. Joseph Osei Bonsu, has called on clergy and prophets in Ghana to exercise caution and restraint when delivering prophecies.

His counsel follows a new directive from the Presidential Envoy for the Interfaith and Ecumenical Relations Office, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, issued on Sunday, August 10, 2025. The directive advises that any prophecy or spiritual revelation concerning high-profile political leaders, governance, national security, or public stability should be formally submitted for urgent assessment before being made public.

The measure comes in the wake of viral social media videos that emerged after the August 6 helicopter crash, which claimed eight lives, including two cabinet ministers.

Speaking to Citi News on Monday, August 11, 2025, Most Rev. Osei Bonsu stressed the need for discretion, especially when revelations have the potential to cause fear or unrest.

“If God has revealed something to you, find the right way to go about it. My concern is that these days, most prophecies focus on death or disaster. In the Old Testament, prophets were sent to preach God’s word and guide people to do what is right — they did not constantly prophesy doom and gloom. Our prophets should learn from that,” he said.

The Bishop Emeritus emphasised that religious leaders should prioritise guidance and hope over messages of destruction, urging a return to the biblical example of prophecy as a tool for moral direction rather than sensational fear.

Meanwhile, Mr Afriyie Ankrah clarified that the directive is not intended to criminalise prophecies. While no arrests will be made for non-compliance, prophets and spiritual leaders who disregard it will be subjected to public scrutiny.

“There is nothing like an arrest when they defy the directive, but society will judge them if they don’t obey. They used to complain that they did not have access to victims, and now they have been given that access,” he said.

The directive forms part of ongoing efforts to maintain national stability, especially in sensitive periods when public discourse is heightened.
