Prophetess Arrested For Allegedly Assaulting, Locking Up 16-Year-Old
The Bono Regional Police Command says it has begun investigations into a prophetess over the alleged assault and unlawful confinement of a 16-year-old boy at Asufufu in the Sunyani East Municipality.
A statement from the Public Affairs Unit of the Ghana Police Service said officers received a distress call on June 23, 2026, that the suspect, identified as 39-year-old Rebecca Kumi, founder of the Overcomers Church, had allegedly assaulted and detained the teenager in a room for several days.
Police said the boy was accused of stealing money by the suspect.
“When police arrived at the church, they met the suspect’s mother, who denied knowledge of the incident. However, a search of the premises led to the discovery of the victim locked in a room,” the statement said.
The boy was reportedly found wearing red shorts, covered with a cloth, and showing visible signs of assault, including injuries on his right shoulder and swelling and dark discolouration around both eyes.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the victim was allegedly beaten with a stick, slapped in the face, and kept in confinement for about five days.
The victim told police he had been living with the suspect since 2024 and denied stealing from her. He also said the incident began on June 17, 2026, when he was questioned over missing money, US dollars, and a Samsung mobile phone.
The boy has been admitted to the Sunyani Municipal Hospital, where he is receiving treatment.
Police further said the suspect, during interrogation in the presence of her lawyer, admitted to the offence and is expected to be taken to court.
The command commended a Good Samaritan who assisted in the rescue and urged the public to continue providing credible information to help fight crime.
