Former Member of Parliament for Subin constituency, Eugene Boakye, has voiced strong concerns about the decision to appoint former Speaker of Parliament, Prof. Mike Oquaye, as the head of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) election review committee.
Boakye, speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, questioned the logic behind selecting Oquaye, suggesting his involvement could be counterproductive to the party’s efforts to understand the causes of its defeat in the 2024 elections.
“Prof. Oquaye is part of the problem, so why should he lead the team to investigate what caused the party’s defeat?” Boakye remarked.
The NPP recently appointed Prof. Oquaye to lead the 11-member committee, which has been tasked with reviewing the party’s internal elections and campaign strategies and identifying the factors that contributed to their electoral loss.
The committee, given three months to complete its work, will also propose solutions to strengthen the party for future elections.
However, Boakye believes that the reasons behind the party’s defeat are already clear, making the committee’s creation unnecessary. “The issues are already there and glaring. So why do we need a committee to address them? They can be checked from our platforms,” he argued.
He also criticised the inclusion of Prof. Oquaye, who, according to Boakye, is viewed by some within the party as part of the problem. Boakye questioned how someone believed to be part of the issue could effectively contribute to finding a solution.
“People have raised concerns about the presence of Mike Oquaye. They believe he is part of the problem, and if that’s the case, how can he be part of the solution?” Boakye asked.
