Organised Labour has called on President John Dramani Mahama to proceed with caution in the ongoing process to remove Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, warning that any hasty actions could have lasting consequences for Ghana’s democratic integrity.
The appeal was made during the 2025 May Day celebration held on Thursday, May 1, where labour leaders gathered at Black Star Square to commemorate workers’ contributions while raising critical national concerns.
Speaking on behalf of the labour movement, Secretary General of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), Joshua Ansah, urged President Mahama to take a measured approach following the suspension of the Chief Justice, which came after a prima facie case was established in response to at least three separate petitions seeking her removal from office.

“Mr President, organised labour is duly concerned about this development. These petitions set the country and its democracy on a slippery slope. We advise Mr President that you hasten slowly and proceed cautiously on this matter,” Mr Ansah said.
He emphasised that the outcome of the process would carry serious implications for the rule of law and the independence of the judiciary, which are foundational pillars of Ghana’s constitutional democracy.
Beyond the Chief Justice issue, Mr Ansah also turned his attention to the government’s handling of illegal mining, known locally as galamsey, which he described as a national failure. He criticised what he sees as the administration’s lack of decisive action in tackling the environmental and socio-economic damage caused by galamsey.
“We can no longer watch silently as our rivers are destroyed, our forests wiped out, and communities poisoned. Mr President, your government must show stronger political will to end this menace,” he charged.
Organised Labour’s intervention adds to a growing national debate about the independence of institutions and the government’s approach to accountability, justice, and the environment as the country approaches the December 2025 general elections.
