Vice-President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has urged Ghanaians, particularly women, to make breast cancer screening a priority for early detection and treatment, stressing that healthy women are the backbone of families and communities.
Speaking at the launch of Breast Cancer Awareness Month 2025 and the International Day of Older Persons in Accra on Wednesday, October 1, the Vice-President reminded women that “early detection saves lives” and called for greater investment in personal well-being.
She also appealed for respect and protection for the elderly, describing them as society’s pillars whose sacrifices and wisdom continue to shape families and communities.

“They play their roles, and the responsibility rests on their shoulders. What we can do, at the very least, is to show them respect, support and understanding,” she said.
The launch, organised by the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MoGSCP), also marked Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s working visit to the ministry. She was accompanied by senior government officials, including her Chief of Staff, Alex Percival Segbefia, and Policy Advisor on Political Affairs, Dr Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo.
The Vice-President assured the ministry of government’s continuous support to protect the vulnerable and promote inclusivity, adding that gender must be mainstreamed across all ministries and sectors.
“For a long time, people equated gender only with women, forgetting the men. But gender involves everyone — boys and girls, the vulnerable, women and men, and even those who are differently abled,” she noted.
MoGSCP Minister, Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, welcomed the delegation and highlighted the ministry’s recent achievements, including the passage of the National Gender Policy (2025–2034), the Domestic Violence Policy (2025–2035), and the Social Protection Act.
She disclosed that plans were underway to construct 16 new shelters nationwide—at least five for the elderly—while also working with the Ministry of Health and the NHIS to improve support for cancer patients.
This year’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month runs under the theme “Catch it early; treat it early; survive it”, while the International Day of Older Persons is being observed under “Older persons driving local and global action: our aspirations, our well-being, and our right.”
