Haruna Iddrisu, the Minister-Designate for Education, has assured Ghanaians of President John Dramani Mahama’s dedication to reviewing and improving the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy.
Speaking during his vetting by Parliament’s Appointments Committee on January 20, 2025, Haruna Iddrisu clarified that the government does not intend to abolish the policy introduced under the Akufo-Addo administration.
Instead, the focus will be on enhancing its sustainability and expanding its scope to benefit more Ghanaians.

“Let me assure this committee that President John Dramani Mahama has no option to cancel Free SHS,” Haruna Iddrisu stated. “Even during his campaign, he made it clear that he intends to expand Free SHS.”
The Tamale South MP reiterated President Mahama’s commitment to adhering to constitutional provisions on education, citing Articles 25 and 38 of the 1992 Constitution, which outline educational objectives.
He further disclosed plans to convene a stakeholder forum to gather insights and recommendations for refining the Free SHS initiative and addressing broader challenges in the education sector.
“Chair, the important thing is that he will subject the Free SHS to a review,” Haruna Iddrisu noted, emphasising the government’s focus on ensuring the policy meets its intended goals while addressing sustainability concerns.
